Avrupa Uzay Ajansı, dünyanın sularını yakın takip altına alıyor.
Avrupa Uzay Ajansı’nın okyanus akıntılarını yakından izlemek amacıyla geliştirdiği uydu Rusya’dan fırlatıldı.
Dünyadaki suyun çevrimini ve hareketlerini anlamak ve ayrıntılı haritalarını çıkarmak için yüksek teknolojiyle üretilen uydu Rusya’nın Plesetsk üssünden fırlatıldı.
658 kiloluk uydu üç kolunda bulunan sensörler yardımıyla okyanusların sıcaklıklarını, tuz oranını, toprağın nemini ölçecek.
Çok hassas aletlerle donatılan uydu, bitki örtüsü ve atmosfer olaylarındaki değişiklikleri de gözönüne alarak iki boyutlu haritalar çıkaracak. 760 kilometre yükseklikten devamlı yer yüzeyini tarayacak olan uydu, su akıntılarını takip edecek.

Students competing in the 2009 BNGIS Competition learned about building global relationships and connections, by using geographic software.
They showed their talent in the field at the Geographic Information System (GIS) Day Celebration, held at the Paul Farquharson Conference Centre, Police Headquarters, November 18.
“The big picture is that we are obligated as a government, and as citizens, to invest in our youth and equip them in 21st century technology that may be used in the school system around The Bahamas,” said the Hon. Phenton Neymour, Minister of State for the Environment.
“An important requirement for building vibrant, safe, and sustainable communities is to have a smart society that has the necessary knowledge and skills to understand our environment and better manage our resources.”
BNGIS encouraged participants to make a positive contribution and be a savvy student population that solves problems and competes in a technologically driven world with new skills.
“The Bahamas National Geographic Information Systems Centre has been very serious about its commitment to promoting GIS in the school system and to improving GIS literacy among teachers and students alike,” said Mr Neymour.

A Geographic Information System/Spatial Information Management (GIS) is a collection of software and geographic data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. Despite the impact of the economic downturn, growing applications and widening usage of GIS software in new avenues such as land management, homeland security, route planning, social networking, Web-based advertising etc., has resulted in an increased interest in GIS software in North America. Given these developments, a major share of this increasing interest is expected to arise from the consumer segments as enterprises have begun limiting GIS usage to areas such as supply chain, enterprise security, logistics, improving customer service and retention etc., where location intelligence is a crucial requirement. Increased use of free Web-based GIS software among enterprises, growing interest among consumer verticals for location-based and navigation services are expected to lead the GIS software market in the North America.

Erzurum Valiliği Bilgi İşlem Merkezi Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemi (CBS) Merkezi Koordinatörlüğü’nden edinilen bilgilere göre, üzerinde bir yıldır çalışmaların yürütüldüğü Erzurum’un Dijital Haritası, tamamlandı. Harita Genel Komutanlığı’ndan Erzurum’a ait 212 adet topografik harita alınarak başlatılan çalışmalar, söz konusu haritalar üzerinde sayısallaştırma yapılarak devam etti. Tapu Kadastro Bölge Müdürlüğü’nden ilçe sınırlarına ait verilerle oluşturulan dijital haritada, köyler, beldeler, bucaklar, mezralar, duble yollar, il ve ilçe yolları, özel idare yolları, asfalt yolları, köy ve mezra yolları, göletler, barajlar ve havalimanı tek tek koordinatlı biçimde işaretlendirilirken, yeni haritanın önümüzdeki günlerde kamuoyuyla paylaşılacağı bildirildi.
HARİTA ÇALIŞMALARINDA UYDU GÖRÜNTÜSÜ KULLANILDI
Harita zamanlanırken, Uzundere, Aziziye, Karayazı, Karaçoban, Oltu, Narman ve Horasan ilçelerine bağlı toplam 348 köy, bu köylere bağlı mahallelerle mezralar ve ilçe merkezlerindeki 49 mahallede CBS işlemlerinin tamamlandığı bildirildi. Söz konusu ilçe, köy ve mahallelerdeki okul, hastane, çeşme ve içme suyu depolarının tek tek resimlenerek dijital haritaya yerleştirildiği belirtilirken, ayrıca haritanın uydu görüntüsüyle de desteklendiği kaydedildi. Erzurum Valiliği Bilgi İşlem Merkezi Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemi (CBS) Merkezi yetkilileri, 21 Ekim 2009 tarihinde Erzurum Merkez, Nenehatun Kavşağı, Palandöken, Konaklı, Çevre Yolu ile E-80’in birleştiği yeri kapsayan 381 kilometrekarelik alanın 60 santimetre çözünürlüğünde uydu görüntüsünün çektirildiğini kaydettiler. Konu ile ilgililer, uydu görüntüsü ile Erzurum merkezinin sosyal ve ekonomik tesislerinin sayısallaştırıldığını dile getirerek, dijital haritanın internet üzerinden de hizmete sunulduğunu kaydettiler.

”Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemleri Günü” düzenlenen sempozyumla kutlandı. Büyükşehir Belediyesiyle Harita ve Kadastro Mühendisleri Odası’nın katkılarıyla düzenlenen sempozyumda bu sistemin özellikle yerel yönetimler için ne kadar gerekli olduğu konusu görüşüldü. Yerel yönetimlere olası afet durumlarında nasıl hareket etmeleri noktasında önemli veriler sunan bu sistemin Türkiye’de yeteri kadar ilgi görmemesinden yakınan konuşmacılar, verdikleri örneklerle sistemin ne kadar gerekli olduğunu anlatmaya çalıştı.
Büyükşehir Belediyesiyle Harita ve Kadastro Mühendisleri Odası dünya genelinde 1999 yılından bu yana kutlanmakta olan Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemi günü nedeniyle bir sempozyum düzenledi. Sempozyumun açılışında konuşan Harita ve Kadastro Mühendisleri Odası Antalya Şube Başkanı İlhami Okudan, Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemleri’nin merkezi ve yerel yönetimler tarafından karar alma sürecinde sosyal, kültürel ve siyasal yapının iyileştirilmesi amacıyla kullanılmasının şart olduğunu söyledi.
Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanı Mustafa Akaydın’da Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemine dayalı Kent Bilgi Yönetim sistemlerinin çağdaş belediyecilik anlayışının kaçınılmaz bir gereksinimi olduğunu vurguladı.
Harita ve Kadastro Mühendisleri Odası Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemleri Komisyon Başkanı Doçent Dr. Çetin Cömert’se merkezi ve yerel yönetimlerin acil durumlar için oluşturacakları B planları için bu sistemin kaçınılmaz olduğunu anlattı.

Antalya Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanı Mustafa Akaydın, kent bilgi sisteminin çağdaş bir belediye için kaçınılmaz bir teknolojik alt yapı ve gereksinim olduğunu söyledi.
Antalya Büyükşehir Belediyesi ile Harita ve Kadastro Mühendisleri Odası’nın birlikte düzenlediği ”Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemleri (CBS) Uygulamaları Paneli” Antalya’da başladı. ASAT Konferans Salonu’ndaki panelin açılışında konuşan Antalya Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanı Mustafa Akaydın, üniversite rektörü iken uzaktan algılama sistemini kurduklarını hatırlatarak, bundan çok başarılı sonuçlar aldıklarını anlattı.
Bugün Antalya Büyükşehir Belediyesi’nin elinde toprak kullanımı ile ilgili verilerin bu sistem sonucunda geldiğine işaret eden Akaydın, ”Bu verilerin üzerine elimizde ayrıca İller Bankası desteğiyle yapılan fotogrametrik harita gibi bir bilgi birikimi de var. Bunları kullanarak yerel yönetimlerin önünü teknolojik olarak açma zamanı geldi. Bu bilgileri ihtiyacı olan diğer kurumlarla da paylaşmaya hazırız” dedi.
Kent bilgi sisteminin çağdaş bir belediye için kaçınılmaz bir teknolojik alt yapı ve gereksinim olduğunun altını çizen Akaydın, şunları söyledi:
”Sizinle her platformda birlikte çalışmaya hazırım. Buna ihtiyacımız var. Belediyenin özellikle İmar ve Şehircilik, Harita ve İstimlak ile Bilgi Teknolojileri Daire Başkanlığı bu konuda büyük ihtiyaç içinde. İşbirliğine ihtiyacımız var. Ancak kent bilgi sistemleri oldukça pahalı projeler. Başlangıç için 15 milyon lira gibi yazılım ödeneğine gereksinim var. Bunu makul boyutlarda geliştirmek için bize yardımcı olursanız, belediyemiz bir eğitim seferberliği kurarak, gerekirse bazı yazılımları kendi üreterek, bu işleri yapabilir. Bu çok ciddi bir yerel yönetim sorumluluğudur.” (more…)

AOL also likely to eye sale of MapQuest–Is Microsoft a possible buyer? November 20, 2009

It has been rumoured that AOL is going to sell some of its peripheral properties. As part of this effort, it is planning to sell different units including ICQ instant-messaging unit and MapQuest online map service.
According to the owner Time Warner, this step has been taken to offload some assets and become a more focused company.
It is expected that, some of the mapping giants like Microsoft may be an ideal candidate to own that service. It is obvious because of the same service it has currently.
AOL bought the MapQuest online map service in 1999.
Earlier, Time Warner had indicated that it would spin off its AOL service to make a separate entity. So it is evident that the company is going for a transformation this time.

After turning the navigation application world upside down, Google created more drama with the pending purchase of AdMob; rumors persist about a worldwide iPhone to be offered by Verizon; Microsoft is dumping MSN Direct; in a crossover, Dell will introduce a smartphone, while AT&T will offer a smart book.
Life won’t be the same for application providers now that Google announced a free, richly featured, turn-by-turn navigation service, available first on Verizon’s new Droid phone. Google has turned current business models on their heads, hastening the decline of fee-based mobile applications, particularly for navigation and other location-based services. Companies will have to follow Google’s lead and find ways to obtain adequate advertising revenue. Mobile advertising has wind in its sails, but app providers need deep pockets while they find their way to revenue.
In part two of its one-two jab, Google is buying mobile advertising network AdMob to shore up its advertising capability for Google Maps Navigation. Google makes most of its ad revenue on text-based advertising connected to search results and hasn’t had the means for display ads, the graphic ads you often see on websites. AdMob specializes in delivering these ads, which are often used by big spending brands. E Marketer Inc. estimates the U.S. mobile advertising market at $416 million this year, climbing to $16 billion by 2013. Other mobile advertising network companies in this space include Quattro Wireless, JumpTap, and Millennial.
A key to enabling the shift to ad-supported navigation was Google’s break last month from Tele Atlas (owned by TomTom) for U.S. mapping data. Mapping companies charge their application partners with a per-user fee that would have made a free navigation application prohibitively expensive. Google has been collecting its own mapping data for the last several years. For other navigation providers, the per-user cost of mapping data will make it hard to duplicate Google’s offering. It will be interesting to see how mapping companies Tele Atlas and Navteq react. (more…)
