Google Maps has nothing on the digital mapping systems used by the state’s emergency communications centers.
Counties across North Carolina have been implementing systems to better locate emergencies when a 911 call comes in, and thanks to a $12.3 million grant awarded to the city of Durham, all 100 counties will benefit from the same group of updated images this year.
The grant, funded by the N.C. 911 Board, allows counties with pre-existing mapping systems to update them with new digital images, and gives those counties without the systems the same technology the rest of the state is using for emergency calls. The grant was paid for by the added 60-cent emergency call surcharge to residents’ telephone bills.
The purpose of the digital mapping system is to piece together images of the state by county, and provide individual counties with images of their — and surrounding — counties. That way, when a 911 call is received, call centers are quickly able to pinpoint the site of the emergency and respond accordingly.
Dexter Brower, director of Alamance County Central Communications, said the grant came at the perfect time for Alamance County. Thanks to the funding, the county won’t have to take money out of its general budget to pay for the updates, which needed to be completed this year.

Türkiye’nin uyuşturucu haritasının hazırlanması için 20 bin aileyle görüşülecek. TUBİM Başkanı Pınarcı, “Türkiye çapında bilimsel bir anket yapacağız. Cumhuriyet tarihinde maalesef böyle bir araştırma yapılmamış” dedi.
Türkiye Uyuşturucu ve Uyuşturucu Bağımlılığı İzleme Merkezi (TUBİM) Başkanı Mustafa Pınarcı, 20 bin aileyle görüşülerek Türkiye’nin “uyuşturucu kullanım haritası”nın çıkartılacağını bildirdi.
Türkiye’deki uyuşturucu yaşı ve bağımlılık yapıcı madde kullanıcılarının sayısı konusunda çeşitli haberler çıktığını hatırlatan Pınarcı, TUBİM’in bu konuda yeni bir çalışma başlattığını bildirdi. Yaptıkları çalışmayla Türkiye’deki uyuşturucu kullanım yüzdesinin belirleneceğini ifade eden Pınarcı, “Türkiye çapında bilimsel bir anket yapacağız. Cumhuriyet tarihinde maalesef böyle bir araştırma yapılmamış. Uyuşturucu kullanım sayısını belirlemek için anket yapacağız. Bunun daha iyi bir yolu yok” diye konuştu.

From inside a computer lab at Front Range Community College, members of Boulder County’s newest 4-H club explored wide swaths of the Front Range with a few mouse clicks.
“I have not ever seen anything like this, so it’s pretty cool,” Blue Mountain Elementary fifth-grader Orion Zona, 11, said as he scrolled around a satellite map of Longmont.
The nine members of the new Boulder County Community Mapping Team are learning about geographic information systems or GIS — a field that addresses gathering, analyzing and presenting geographic information, often by creating maps.
During the team’s second meeting Saturday afternoon, students marked grocery stores near their schools on a satellite map. Their findings will be entered into the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food environment atlas, which provides data on a community’s ability to access healthy foods.
The new club is the latest initiative among local 4-H clubs to offer more STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — programming and provide youths with the skills to work in science and math fields. (more…)

Bolu Belediyesi, ‘Uydudan Araç Takip Sistemi’yle tüm araçlarını gözetim altında tutuyor. Bu sayede hem yakıt, hem zamandan tasarruf sağlanıyor. Belediye başkan yardımcıları da dahil olmak üzere belediyeye ait tüm araçların maksat dışı kullanımının önüne geçilmiş oluyor.
Bolu Belediye Başkan Yardımcısı İhsan Ağcan, yaptığı açıklamada, hükumetin başlattığı ‘e-devlet’ projesinin devam ettiğini ancak Bolu Belediyesi olarak, ‘e-belediye’ sistemini önceden hazırladıklarını söyledi. Bu kapsamda yaklaşık 1 yıldır çalışmaların devam ettiğini belirten Ağcan, belediyenin teknolojinin imkanlarını kullandığını aktardı.
Artık dünyanın buna doğru gittiğine işaret Ağcan, “Bizler Bolu Belediyesi olarak, teknolojinin önünde seyrediyoruz. ‘e-türkiye’ tam yürürlüğe girmedi ama biz ‘e-belediye’ noktasında çok hızlı adımlar atıyoruz ve bunun meyvelerine de oldukça hızlı alıyoruz.” dedi. Bu kapsamda Ulaşım Master Planı, İmar ve Fen İşleri, Belediye Arşivi’nin dijital ortama taşınması ile ilgili çalışmaların bitmek üzere olduğunu belirten Ağcan, belediyeye ait 113 araç bulunduğunu ve bu araçların araç takip sistemi ile anlık ve geçmişe dönük gözlenebileceğini ifade etti. Mardin Valiliği tarafından Mardin’de kurulması planlanan Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemi (CBS) bilgilendirme toplantısı düzenlendi.
Elektronik Haber Ajansı (e-ha) muhabirinin edindiği bilgiye göre Valilik Nişli Toplantı Salonunda düzenlenen toplantıya Mardin Valisi Hasan Duruer, Vali Yardımcısı Şenol Koca, İl Özel idaresi Genel Sekreteri Halil Homan, Mardin Belediye Başkanı Beşir Ayanoğlu ve kurum amirleri katıldı.
Toplantıda Bimtaş Coğrafi Bilgi ve Uzaktan Algılama Şefi Selahattin Taşpınar ile CBS asistanı İbrahim Şimşek, Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemi hakkında bilgi verdi.
Bimtaş Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemleri Asistanı İbrahim Şimşek, genel manada CBS’nin, analiz yapma imkânı sunan ve bu analiz sonuçlarına göre doğru kararlar vermeyi kolaylaştıran bir sistem olduğunu söyledi. Sistemi ilk defa Kocaeli’nde yapıldığını ve şu anda uygulandığını kaydeden Şimşek ” Bu sistem önceleri Amerika’da CİA tarafınsan yurt içi ve yurt dışı bilgileri toplayıp bunları yönetme ve ulaşabilme amacı ile kurulan bir sistemdi. Daha sonra özel sektör bunu halkın kullanabileceği bir seviyeye taşıdı. Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemlerinde 2 tür veri vardır. Bunlardan birincisi sözel verilerdir. Diğeri mekânsal bilgilerdir. Bu sistemin temel amacı en az maliyetli en doğru şekilde halka ulaşılmasını sağlamaktır. Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemi, coğrafya, haritacılık ve bilgisayar bilimleri ile ilgili bir teknoloji olup Coğrafi Veri Altyapısı bileşenlerinden Bilgi Teknolojileri kapsamında yer alır.

You may not know what GIS is, but the Geographic Information Systems are critical planning tools that is used in everything from archaeology, to urban planning to utility management.
This week, ESRI, the leading Global software company dedicated to GIS is in Belize this week with a vision, it says, aimed at developing GIS technology in Belize. ESRI, has teamed up with the Land Information Center and Trimble Navigation to host the First Annual Belize GIS User Conference and Exhibition, and by all accounts, interest was high amongst Belizean companies and government departments, as was evident by the huge turnout at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza.
“Right, depending on the device that you have, you can get just the position of where that vehicle is but more importantly you can get information about say humidity of our cargo, the temperature of the cargo or whether someone actually tries to get in and all that is in real-time going through either your cell phone. Network or in remote areas though satellites.”

A diverse range of organisations are turning to geographical information systems (GIS) to solve many business issues, says Aspire Solutions’ Mike Steyn – and the potential is set to explode as real-time spatial information becomes more widely available.
“Taking a spatial view brings a new dimension to planning and decision-making,” says Steyn. “A single map can provide rapid insight into data that would otherwise take up many pages of tables and charts, and be much more difficult to understand.”
The Airports Company of South Africa, one of Aspire Solutions’ largest clients, uses GIS to tie together aspects of its operation as diverse as retail property management, emergency services planning, wildlife control and regulatory compliance.
For example, Airports Company SA is responsible for co-ordinating emergency services whenever an aircraft-related incident takes place within a certain radius of one of its airports. “Geographical info is critical to Airports Company SA’s incident management,” says Steyn. “They need to know the exact locations of every road, clinic, hospital, fire station and police station within 20km of their airports.” (more…)

Geçtigimiz yil sonunda gelistirdigi CBS projesini; T.C. Bayindirlik ve Iskân Bakanligi, Nüfus ve Vatandaslik Isleri Genel Müdürlügü ve Devlet Planlama Teskilati’na sunan Kocaeli Büyüksehir Belediyesi’ne Kocaeli’nin pilot il seçilmesi konusunda teklif geldi. Teklifin kabul edilmesiyle birlikte Türkiye Ulusal Cografi Bilgi Sisteminin ilk uygulamasinin Kocaeli’de yapilmasi kararlastirildi. Bu proje ile ulusal düzeyde teknolojik gelismelere uygun Cografi Bilgi Sistemi altyapisi kurularak, kamu kurum ve kuruluslarinin sorumlusu olduklari cografi bilgileri ortak altyapi üzerinden kullanicilara sunmalari saglanacak.
Cografi verilerin tüm kullanici kurumlarin ihtiyaçlarina cevap verecek sekilde standartlari olusturularak, cografi veri degisim standartlari belirlenecek. Türkiye Ulusal Cografi Bilgi Sistemi (TUCBS) bu amaçlara hizmet edecek bir e-devlet projesi olarak nitelendiriliyor. Cografi Bilgi Sistemleri (CBS), günümüz gelismis teknolojilerini kullanarak, sürekli güncellenen uydu görüntülü haritalar üzerinde elde edilebilecek tüm hizmetleri kapsiyor. Gece vakti acil nöbetçi eczane arandiginda, sinava girilecek okulun yerini bulurken, herhangi bir arsanin ada/parsel bilgilerini ögrenmek için, nüfusu her geçen gün hizla artan sehrimizin ulasim planini hazirlarken, modern sehir planlamasi yapilirken, sehre altyapi hizmetleri sunarken ve benzeri birçok uygulamada cografi bilgi sistemleri kullaniliyor.

Tevfik Özdemir, Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemlerinin Mesleki Uygulama Konusunda Önemli Bir Rol Üstlendiğini, Uygulamanın Yüzde 70′ini Oluşturduğunu Söyledi.
TMMOB Harita ve Kadastro Mühendisleri Odası İstanbul Şube Başkanı Tevfik Özdemir, Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemlerinin (CBS) mesleki uygulama konusunda önemli bir rol üstlendiğini, uygulamanın yüzde 70′ini oluşturduğunu söyledi. Harita ve Kadastro Mühendisleri Odasının düzenlediği Dünya CBS Günü ve Bilinçlendirme Etkinliği, İTÜ Taşkışla Yerleşkesinde gerçekleştirildi.
Etkinlikte konuşan Özdemir, CBS’nin Türkiye’de eski bir geçmişi olduğunu ve Dünya CBS Günü’nün de 10 yıldır kutlandığını hatırlattı.
‘Coğrafi Bilgilendirme Sistemleri, mesleğimizi uygulama konusunda önemli bir rol üstleniyor. Uygulamanın yüzde 70′ini oluşturuyor’ diyen Özdemir, bu çerçevede harita ve kadastro mühendislerinin önemli sorumluluklar üstlendiğini vurguladı. (more…)

How can people take a virtual tour through an oil town that no longer exists or plan an event around amenities and park trails?
“Through Geographic Information Systems [GIS], which is like ‘Google Earth’ on Steroids,” said Margaret Teevens, Natrona County Parks.
According to CC GIS instructor Jeff Sun, clients using student-generated data on a project to help solve a problem or make a decision mean students gain real world experience.
Groups from the last three advanced GIS classes have contributed to a RMOTC Teapot Dome historic map project which covers the greater Salt Creek area. RMOTC (Rocky Mountain Oilfield Testing Center) and Anadarko have helped the class find data about the historic communities centered on their oil fields dating back to the 1920s.
“There’s nothing left,” Eddie Hutton said of the houses, banks and general stores. Looking at an old picture of Lavoy, she noted the triangular corner restaurant resembled a miniature of New York City’s Flatiron building.
