The topic for this week’s GIS Spotlight, which will be broadcast on Thursday, 17 June, is hurricane preparedness, providing viewers tips on how to protect life and property before, during and after a disaster. The programme will air at 7:30pm on Island 24.
Since shutting down services at a hospital is not an option, the Health Services Authority also must prepare for emergencies. Cameras will go behind the scenes to see where generators are tested, systems checked, and medical, dietary and other supplies are stockpiled.
Also, the hospital’s disaster relief mobile unit, which can be set up for triage anywhere on island, will be featured.
Host Heather Hopson will interview HSA Medical Director Dr Greg Hoeksema and other top officials about the hospital’s hurricane plan, and how it has been strengthened since Ivan.
There will be advice for pregnant women and for critical care patients, as well as which hurricane shelters will have medical staff on hand for those having specific medical needs.
Finally, the basic supplies residents need to have on hand will be the focus of a shopping trip with the Department of Environmental Health to discover how to create an emergency kit suited to all budgets.
