Activities Of The National Year Of Environment 2009 January 1, 2009

The activities of the National Year of Environment are commencing on Thursday with issuance of commemorative stamps as first step on January 1st 2009 and with a commitment to cope with the global challenge of environmental degradation and climate change.

Launching the National Year of Environment 2009 was announced by the Federal Minister for Environment, Mr. Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi at a press conference.

Ministry of Environment has developed a comprehensive plan of activities for engaging all stakeholders including government and non-government institution, civil society organizations, conservation professionals, academia, local communities and electronic /print media for a proactive role in the environment conservation and achieving sustainable development. The activities to be executed during the month of JANUARY include Issuance of Commemorative stamps (1st Jan), Printing of Environmental Calendar for 2009, Regional Conference on Climate Change, Launch of report – Pakistan’s Option for Climate Change Mitigation & Adaptation, Global Environnent Facility National Dialogue Initiative, Training of village activists on Open Defecation Free (ODF), Environment in villages through communities, Conference on Ensuring Resource Governance at local level.

The programme for the month of FEBRUARY consist of celebration of World Wetland Day on Feb 2nd, Wetlands Extravaganza 2009, Seminar on water issues at Quetta, Launching of Compendium of Leadership Associate Project, Launch of Pakistan wetlands policy consultation process, 4th ECO Ministerial Meeting on Environment, Development of webportal for water, sanitation and hygiene, Launching of the National Sustainable Development Strategy for Pakistan, Conference / Exhibition on forest Products in coordination with Pakistan Forest Institute (PFI), Conference / Exhibition on forest Products in coordination with PFI, Sustainable land management project inception workshop / launch of project, Launch of Spring Tree Planting Campaign, Wetlands Carnivals at National level and Wetlands Mela at community levels.

During MARCH Launch of Pakistan Clean Air Programme, World Forestry Day, Economics of Environment – International Conference in Islamabad, Seminar on Youth and Environment (Islamabad), World Water Day and Student Convention on Youth Climate Change Network will be held. The events planned for APRIL are Launching of Pakistan Water & Sanitation Programme, Organize Journalist workshops with special reference to “2009-Year of Environment” AJK, airing of documentary on Biodiversity, National stakeholders meeting on Atmospheric Brown Cloud (ABC), Launch of Urdu Books on Environment, Provincial level seminar at Lahore on water issues, celebration of Earth Day-22 April, Launch of report on Access & Benefit Sharing of natural resources, Launch of the National Drinking Water Policy & Quality Standards. During MAY the programmes to be held include Launch of Green City Programme, International Day for Biological Diversity – 22nd May, Debate and Painting competitions of school children on Environmental Issues, International Convention on Ecotourism with PMAC, Launch of National Standards and Designs for School Water and Sanitation Facilities. In JUNE events include Launching of Green Industry Programme, World Environment Day – 5th June, National Consultation on Wetlands Policy, Annual Fair/Exhibition of local products, Gilgit, Launch of Environment Pictorial Directory, Launch of Pakistani Poems Book on Environment, Regional meeting of the South Asia Youth Environment Network, World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought – Newspaper supplement, Launch of the National Land Use Plan. Activities for JULY are Launching of River Clean up Programme, Launch of Pakistan specific Carbon Foot Print Calculator, Release of National Behavioral Change communication strategy in support of Drinking Water and Sanitation Policies / strategies, Inter-governmental Meeting of the Male’ Declaration on Transboundary Air Pollution. National Year of Environment activities during AUGUST are Launch of Tree Planting Campaign, Organize Ecotourism promotion Camp Village, AJK, Inception workshop of the Karakorum project, Joint workshop for upper and lower riparian. In SEPTEMBER a Seminar on 50 years of Islamabad’s development and Environment, International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 16th Sept. are the events. The month of OCTOBER begins with Launching of village Clean up Programme and continues with observing International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction-2nd Oct, World Habitat Day – 5th Oct, Global Hand washing Day – 15th Oct, Launch of GIS based Sustainable land management information system. The programme for NOVEMBER are National Seminar on Sustainable land management, World Toilet Day – 19th November, International Day for Prevention Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict – 6th November. Whereas in DECEMBER activities include Lessons Sharing – Research studies on hydrological, geo physical and socio economic findings, 3 Sessions on environment related subjects in 12th Sustainable Development Conference of SDPI, International Mountain Day – 11th Dec, Institution of Environment Excellence Awards in Nature Conservation, Env Journalism, Clean Industry and Sanitation.
