The DNR had to do its own detective work to track down the aerial photos, originally authorized in 1933. The forerunner of today’s USDA Farm Service Agency ordered the statewide aerial photography as a tool to review land uses, ensure compliance with acreage reduction programs and develop soil surveys.
It took four years to find and process these first statewide aerial photos. Originally housed in what are now the county offices of the Farm Service Agency, some of these photos had been lost. Most were found in the Iowa Department of Transportation’s archives where they were used to develop roads. The DNR and partners unearthed other photos in USDA offices and the University of Iowa’s Map Library. As a last resort, the DNR purchased some photos from the National Archive.

The project was funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Iowa DNR.

Researchers at Southampton University have developed a cell phone which incorporates a system called Map Snapper, allowing users to find local points of interest on a map.
Map Snapper processes a photo of a printed map, captured on camera phone, and forwards an interactive version of the same map back to the handset.
Points of interest such as restaurants, hotels and festivals are pinpointed with symbols and images, contact details and web links are also provided.
According to Paul Lewis, who developed the system with his colleague Jonathan Hare, “If someone is out walking and reaches a town, they’ll be able to simply point their phone at the map and find out places they could go for lunch, or other information not on the map.”
Map Snapper would be used in ordinary camera phones, as it would not be necessary in cell phones fitted with GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers. The software sends a photo of a section of map to a central server via GPRS.

SIUE adjusts to demand for science labs January 11, 2009

New science labs in University Park will help with overcrowding, but won’t be able to cut down the lab hours on the SIUE campus.
As Southern Illinois University Edwardsville goes into its 10th year waiting for a new science building, the university has leased space from University Park and outfitted two new science labs, and is moving the Geographic Information Systems department to the new building. The nine-month project cost $1.5 million.
Chancellor Vaughn Vandegrift said the exploding demand in SIUE’s science and pre-professional departments has led to a high demand for lab classes. The nursing department has gone from 350 students to more than 800 in the last four years, and the 360-student pharmacy school did not exist four years ago.
Overall, interest in SIUE has ballooned in recent years — five years ago, there were 3,000 applications for the freshman class. So far, SIUE has received 7,000 freshman applications for fall 2009.
“It speaks volumes about the quality of our institution,” Vandegrift said.
But it leads to crowded classrooms, and SIUE has been lobbying for a new science building — price-tagged at $80 million — for several years. Chemistry labs now run seven days a week, with classes held 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and biology labs are nearly as overrun. Those schedules will likely continue, with an additional five days a week at the new facility, Vandegrift said. (more…)
